The Goats Again

Our purpose in having our goats is to have them produce milk. Well, if you know your basic biology, mammals produce milk after bearing offspring.

We have three goats. I am milking Hannah, she is an older Saanen, we got her when she was pregnant. She gave birth to two kids last February and I have been milking her since then. One of her kids is Esther. We gave away the little buck. And our other goat is Lydia, a La Mancha.

Esther and Lydia are now at that age where they can have their  own kids and start to produce milk for us. We don’t have a buck of our own for many reasons: not enough property to keep an extra goat, and the big reason…they stink. So we had to find someone with a buck that would be available for stud.

It took a while but we did find someone and her Nubian buck named Jack of Diamonds. We made the trip to visit Jack, first with Esther and then Lydia. An hour and a half round trip.

So hopefully in mid to late June we will have new baby goats and two more goats to milk. I am hoping that Hannah will continue to produce milk until the two newbies get started and then Hannah can enjoy her retirement. I’ll keep you posted!
