We Need a Law for That!

It seems that some…let’s call them “naive”… people think that the answer to any problem is a new law.

I was just reading an editorial in the local paper (yes, I live in the country in the middle of nowhere) about a lady who was complaining that some dogs came into her yard and killed her two cats. She thinks the solution to this problem, and so no one else will have to suffer this tragedy, is to have year round leash laws. I admit, it is sad that her cats got killed, but really? Another law? What if these were stray dogs? Or they escaped from their yard while the owner was at work? Are the dogs going to be informed that they must be on a leash and not just running around unchaperoned? I think that the people to whom the dogs belong should be accountable, but another law is not going to solve the problem.

This brings to mind other stupid laws such as some in New York that have been, at least, discussed. Such as lowering salt in foods sold in restaurants, or not selling sodas larger than 32 oz. What? Are they going to outlaw salt shakers? Can’t someone just buy two bottles if they want more soda?

And of course the big one…gun laws. Hot topic in my house. If strict gun laws are made and enforced then who is going to have guns? Are the criminals going to suddenly become concerned about what the law is? Umm…no! Most mass shootings are committed in so called “Gun Free” places. So are the “gun-free” zones really the safest places to be? Personally, I try to avoid them.

Maybe people don’t follow the logic and just think that the government officials say that this needs to be done so it must be for the best. Law breakers and people who have no respect for the law are not going to suddenly change their way of thinking if a new law is enacted.

Sad to say that many in our country fall into this group of “naive” people. I just hope they start thinking for themselves before it is too late. Maybe we should have a law against “naive” (stupid) people.

You know, we have a tax on stupid, a law against stupid isn’t such a crazy idea—you just need to be creative and market it properly. For instance, th stupid tax is marketed as a program to fund education and is totallt voluntary, people line up to “pay” it its called the lottery.
